Three die in Friday night crash in Claxton

Fourth person, a juvenile, was airlifted to UT Medical

Three people from Ohio died in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening, July 22, in the Claxton community at the intersect of Edgemoor and Old Emory roads.

Peter Webel, 76, the driver of an SUV turning from Old Emory Road onto Edgemoor Road, and two passengers, Linda Webel, 76, and Frieda Gottschling, all from Mansfield, Ohio, died at the scene of the crash, a Tennessee Highway Patrol report shows.

The report says a pickup truck driven by a juvenile from Knoxville hit the driver’s side of Webel’s SUV, causing it to flip and “come to rest on its top.”

Emergency crews shut down Edgemoor for most of Friday night. The roadway was reopened by Saturday morning.

The juvenile was seriously injured and was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The driver of the pickup truck was heading west on Edgemoor Road.

The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Friday night. THP is investigating the crash and charges may be pending.
