Lady Dragons on the cusp of control of District 3-AAA

A fast start to the 2022 season continued for the Clinton High School volleyball team last week.

The Lady Dragons, who swept three matches, closed the week with a 25-11, 25-7, 25-11 District 3-AAA victory over Powell at home Thursday night.

“We’re playing well, and Powell is struggling a little bit,” Clinton Coach Lorri Johnson said.

The Lady Dragons (11-2, 4-0) are tied with Oak Ridge atop the league standings. The deadlock was broken Tuesday night as Clinton traveled to face the Wildcats (6-4, 4-0). Results weren’t available at press time, but Johnson said she was eagerly anticipating the match.

“That will be a good test for us,” Johnson said before the match. “It will be a barometer for me and for us to see how far we’ve come.”

The Lady Dragons, however, have been impressive against district opponents in 2022, posting league victories over Campbell County, Karns, Knoxville Central and Powell.

Clinton has swept the Lady Cougars, the Lady Bobcats and the Lady Panthers. It also has a four-set win over the Lady Beavers.

Against the Lady Panthers, CHS was dominant as the final score would indicate. The Lady Dragons had several players make significant contributions.

Riley Owens finished with 10 kills, and Ellie Murrell posted six kills and five blocks. Brooklynn Blisard and freshman Lanee Carmichael recorded four kills each. Carmichael served up a pair of aces.

Josie Moody had a stellar serving performance as she had 13 aces. Defensively, she finished the match with eight digs.

Zavie Ford was Clinton’s top defender of the night as she came up with 12 digs.

The Lady Dragons opened the week with a two-set sweep of Loudon as they prevailed 25-13, 25-8 against the Lady Redskins.

Clinton continued its unblemished district run on Tuesday, Aug. 23, with a 25-9, 25-15, 25-13 win over Knoxville Central at home.

Carmichael had eight kills, four assists and three digs for the Lady Dragons. Darbi Brummett posted seven kills, five blocks, three aces and six digs.

Riley Owens finished with five kills, eight digs and two aces against the Lady Bobcats.
