Lady Dragons play a heavy load in a two-week span

It was a busy week on the volleyball court at Clinton High School.

The Lady Dragons (16-10 overall, 6-2 in District 3-AAA) played seven matches in a weekend tournament Saturday, winning two.

Clinton posted victories over Lenoir City (25-13, 25-6) and Sumiton Christian School (Alabama), prevailing 27-25, 25-9.

The Lady Dragons suffered losses to Sale Creek, Tallulah Christian (Georgia), Somerville (Alabama), Lafayette (Kentucky) and John Battle (Virginia).

They also had three matches during the week.

The Lady Dragons won a district match over Campbell County Thursday night, capturing a 25-16, 25-14, 25-12 victory against the Lady Cougars.

Freshman Lanee Carmichael had nine kills and Darbi Brummett added five kills, four aces, five digs and two blocks. Josie Moody finished with 10 digs and 22 assists, while Riley Owens and Zavie Ford chipped in with seven digs each. McKenzie Crisp came up with six digs.

Clinton also won a non-district match at Jellico on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The Lady Dragons prevailed in straight sets, capturing 25-14, 25-8, 25-9 victories in a match that saw Moody serve up 15 aces. Carmichael had five kills and two digs.

The Lady Dragons, who entered this week in third place in the District 3-AAA standings, opened the week with a league loss against Knoxville’s West High School. The Lady Rebels swept Clinton 25-13, 25-9, 25-21 in a match on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Clinton Coach Lorri Johnson said she was pleased with her team’s effort early last week.

“It took us a while to get used to the tempo in the match against West but we did better in the third set as you can see by the 25-21 score,” Johnson said. “Campbell County and Jellico were two of the matches that we had early in the season and this time, we improved tremendously.”

Owens had six kills, one block and seven digs in the match while Moody had 16 assists and 13 digs. Crisp added 10 digs and Carmichael finished with eight.

The Lady Dragons played at Karns Tuesday but results were not available at press time.

Clinton travels to Union County tonight (Wednesday) and heads to Fountain City to play Knoxville Central Thursday.
