A late-season hiccup served as motivation for the Oak Ridge High School volleyball team last week.

The Lady Wildcats, who lost a regular-season District 3-AAA match to Karns at home on Sept. 26, have now won four straight. They claimed the district tournament championship when they swept top-seeded Knoxville West 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 Thursday night at Karns High School.

“We had that hiccup, for whatever reason and we don’t know why it happened, and then we came back, and we did some different things both on and off the court,” Oak Ridge Coach Audrey Sherles said. “We had three good games in the tournament. The girls played really clean.

“The kids are proud of themselves. They had few errors and I think that pride will come to the forefront in the region tournament.”

The Region 2-AAA Tournament was contested Tuesday at Maryville High School. Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Wildcats played Heritage, while the host Lady Rebels played West High. Semifinal winners advanced to Tuesday’s championship match and qualified for Thursday’s state sectional round.

Oak Ridge’s Peyton Uptgraft was the district tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She had 30 assists, 10 digs and three service aces. Nike Edmondson finished with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Lily Yassu had 14 kills and hit. 263.
