Bentz places 19th in state golf championship

Sophomore Jack Bentz posted a Top 20 finish in the 2022 TSSAA golf state championship.
Oak Ridge sophomore Jack Bentz completed the 2022 high school golf season on the grand stage late last week.

Bentz posted a Top 20 finish in the two-day, 36-hole event at The Sevierville Golf Club River Course.

Bentz finished with a two-day score of 151. He opened play in the first round Thursday with a 6-over 78 before rebounding to fire a 1-over 73 on Friday. He finish tied for 19th in the event.

Wildcatsm Coach Scott Hinton said he was pleased with Bentz’ performance.

“He played pretty well, especially for a sophomore,” Hinton said. “He learned a lot, and overall, I think he was pretty happy with the way he played. He learned some things.

“We played the River Course at Sevierville Golf Club and he played 52 holes. We went up and he played a practice round on Wednesday and that course is a long walk. It was a difficult walk and a difficult course.”

One hole proved problematic for Bentz in both rounds of competition.

On Friday, he bounced back to card a birdie on two late holes, finishing his round on a high note.

“He double bogeyed a Par-5 both days, and if he pars that hole, he’s looking at finishing in the Top 10, and you’re all-state at that point,” Hinton said.
