Mavs ‘out-physical’ a 6A powerhouse

It seemed like it took a while to get rolling, but once it did, Friday night’s non-region tilt at Maverick Stadium between the Anderson County High School Mavericks and the Bearden Bulldogs lived up to expectations.

The Mavs won 35-28 in an old-fashioned brawl.

Anderson County Head Coach Davey Gillum said the previous week that the Bearden game would be like a cherry on top of the dessert.

He wasn’t wrong, but also added, “It’s so relieving, just to get it over. This was the big one left. They may be the hottest team in Knoxville.

“I talked to Knox West and those guys about them (Bearden) and they said, ‘They are really good.’ They’re really athletic, really physical and when they (West High School) played them in that first game they said they weren’t good on [offense] yet, but were getting better. So to come out, beat them, huge,” Gillum said.

And the Bulldogs are really good.

But so are the Mavs.

Anderson County had, as their coach says, “two of the biggest, strongest, meanest football players on the field,” in Eli Davis and Gavin Noe.
