Mavs wrestlers finish 2022 portion of season in good form

Anderson County High School’s wrestling team closed out the 2022 portion of its schedule with a stellar showing at one of the biggest tournaments in the Southeast last weekend.

The Mavericks finish in sixth place at the Bobby Bates Classic in Wise, Virginia.

ACHS was part of a 37-team field that included teams from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Mavericks had seven athletes place in their respective weight classes.

“I was really happy with the way we wrestled,” Anderson County Coach Matt Slone said. “We finished sixth and had seven guys place, and they expanded the tournament from 31 or 32 teams to 37 teams and we finished sixth in that 37-team field.”

In the 132-pound weight class, Lucas Prewitt posted a second-place finish as he reached the tournament championship match for the second consecutive season.

Gabe Dietlin came in fourth in the 113-pound division. Freshman Evan Prewitt finished fifth.

Heavyweight Jayden Bullock claimed fifth in his bracket.

ACHS had three seventh-place finishers, including MacLean Spurling (157 pounds), Ayden Derry (190) and Eli Bratton (215).
