Clinton wrestling is peaking at the right time
Channing McDonald had a triumphant homecoming Thursday night as the Clinton High School wrestling team notched a dual meet victory in Knoxville.
McDonald coached at West High School before coming to Clinton. He also wrestled for the Rebels.
The Dragons made sure their coach’s return to Marble City was a happy one as they routed West 60-12.
Clinton’s only losses of the night were forfeits in the 170-pound weight class and in the 285-pound division.
“We kind of skunked them a little bit,” McDonald said. “But their caliber of wrestling is getting better and they’ll get there.
“The only losses we had were forfeits because we just couldn’t fill the roster out. But we proved that we could wrestle with anybody.”
Dalton Kendall (195 pounds). And Dylan Spurlock (220) helped the Dragons take an early 12-0 in the dual as they won by forfeit.
Clinton and the Rebels double forfeited at 106, 113 and 132.
Justice Snyder and Caleb Kendall each won by pin.
Snyder, the Dragons’ 120-pounder, pinned the Rebels’ Thomas Pitman in 4 minutes, 55 seconds.
Caleb Kendall stuck West High’s Alexander Valladares in 1:31 at 126.
In the 138-pound weight class, Parker Sanchez pinned Justin Jimenez at the 1:45 mark of the bout.
Clinton’s Matson Kent scored a pin in the 145-pound match while the Dragons’ Riley Silk claimed a major decision as he defeated the Rebels’ Jacob Branch, 11-2 in the 152-pound class.
In the 160-pound weight class, CHS’s Tailen Scott pinned Zachary Collins in 3:20.
In the final match of the night, Clinton’s Keagan Bolen (182 pounds) scored a major decision as he defeated Cooper Etheridge, 11-4.
The Dragons return to the mat today (Feb. 1) as they travel across town to tangle with Anderson County.
Action begins at 11:30 a.m.
