The struggles continue for the Anderson County High School girls basketball team.

The Lady Mavericks lost their third-consecutive game Friday night.

ACHS (7-15 overall, 1-5 in District 4-AAA) closed out the district portion of its regular-season schedule with a 59-47 loss to Knoxville Halls at home.

The Lady Mavs have struggled to remain healthy as their 2022-23 season has been packed with injury and illness but coach Mitch Cupples remained upbeat has the team entered the week with six regular-season games remaining.

“We’re going to have to get on a roll. We have six games left and we’ve already seen everybody,” Cupples said. “We’ll have to go out and win those.”

The Lady Mavericks hosted Gibbs Tuesday night with hopes of avenging an earlier loss to the Lady Eagles. Results were not available at press time.

Anderson County will travel to Lenoir City Friday and the Lady Panthers (18-2 heading into play this week) have beaten the Lady Mavericks twice this season. LCHS prevailed 44-43 in Clinton on Jan. 3. The Lady Panthers also defeated the Lady Mavericks on their home floor, 58-50, in December.

Against the Lady Devils late last week, Anderson County had a lead midway through the third quarter before things came undone.

“We came out and we competed. We had a lead with five minutes left in the third quarter,” Cupples said. “But they outscored us 18-3 in the third quarter and we lost by 12, so we won the other three quarters.

Lydia Meldrum had 16 points against Halls while Shelby finished with 14.
