Two qualify for ‘Fittest of the Coast,’ CrossFit competition

Jayce Horton placed third in the teen division at the Fittest of the Coast in 2022.
Two student-athletes, one from Anderson County High School and one from Clinton High School, qualified to compete in the Fittest of the Coast, a CrossFit competition to be held in Charleston, S.C., this coming weekend.

Hayden Harrell, a freshman at CHS, where he wrestles and plays baseball, originally joined CrossFit to build his strength and add power behind his baseball bat.

He now appreciates the stamina it has also given him allowing him to go toe-to-toe with more-experienced wrestlers. In September, Harrell competed at the Pit Fitness Ranch Elite Teen Throwdown in Three Rivers, Mich., bringing home third place for his age group.

Harrell, however, won’t be able to compete in the competition this weekend after finding out a pulled muscle in his mid-section was actually a broken rib.

He found that out after wrestling against ACHS two weeks ago. But he is still qualified for the event.

Jayce Horton is a sophomore at ACHS, where he plays football.

He initially joined CrossFit to improve his football game, but quickly found a love for CrossFit competitions.

In 2022, Jayce placed third in the teen division at the Fittest of the Coast. He is looking forward to spending time in Charleston bonding with the other teen athletes at the competition.

These boys are dedicated student athletes who begin their day at Clinch Valley Crossfit at 5:30 a.m., go to school and then have practice at their respective sports in the afternoons. They work hard and deserve to be recognized for that.

They also had to be in the Top 10 in order to qualify to compete, which is not an easy task in itself.
