Wrestlers are heading to state
The 2022-23 high school wrestling season culminates this week with the TSSAA State championships in Middle Tennessee.
The tournament opens Thursday morning at the Williamson County Ag Exposition Arena.
Clinton High School will send three athletes, including the first-ever female wrestler from the school.
Freshman Janella Casado will represent Clinton High on the grand stage.
The other two CHS grapplers are Riley Silk and Matson Kent.
Anderson County High School will have five athletes competing on the Volunteer State’s grand stage, the Class AA state championships.
The five Mavericks grapplers to win medals at Saturday’s Section 1-AA championship meet at Bearden High School in Knoxville included Gabe Dietlin (113 pounds), Lucas Prewitt (132), Evan Prewitt (145), Josh Bingham (160) and Ayden Derry (195).
Lucas Prewitt was ACHS’s top finisher on the day as he came in second in his weight class.
Dietlin, Evan Prewitt, Bingham and Derry all qualified with fourth-place finishes in their respective divisions.
The top four finishers advanced to Franklin and the state championships.
Mavs Coach Matt Slone said he was pleased with his team’s showing at the sectionals in West Knoxville.
“We were happy with the way we wrestled,” Sloane said. “I thought we might have had a couple of more make it to state, but they lost their first match.
“It’s hard to come back out of the losers bracket after you lose your first match.”
