Roane State sophomore from Clinton notches first-ever hole-in-one
The Roane State Raiders men’s golf team opened the 2023 campaign with a fourth-place finish (out of 14 teams) at the CIU Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
The team missed a three-way tie for second place by only one stroke.
In the opening round on Monday, Feb. 20, the Raiders shot a combined 320 for the day.
They followed that performance with a much-improved 309 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 629.
St. Andrews and Spartanburg Methodist tied for second place in the invitational.
Each team finished with a two-day total of 628.
Bryan College claimed first place with a two-day total of 601.
Raiders freshman Kieran McCarthy shot a 152 for the Raiders to earn fifth place and a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Nick Daugherty finished one stroke back at 153.
On Monday, Daugherty aced the 172-yard, par-3 17th hole.
It was Daugherty’s first-ever hole-in-one, as well as the first one ever recorded in the tournament.
Next up for the Raiders is the Bobby Nichols Invitational, hosted by Tennessee Tech on March 12-14.
The three-round event will be played at the Sevierville River Course in Pigeon Forge.
