After opening its 2023 season with a loss at Oliver Springs on Monday, March 20, the Clinton High softball team has won two of its last three games.

On Tuesday, March 22, the Lady Dragons opened District 4-AAA play with a 20-0 three-inning victory over the Scott Lady Highlanders in Huntsville.

The Lady Dragons got off to a fast start against Scott as they scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning. After being held off the scoreboard in the second frame, CHS finished the contest with 10 hits and took advantage of five Lady Highlander errors, scoring seven runs in the third inning.

Bree McKamey and Taylor Sherwood had two hits each, and Lyonnee Adkins drove in three runs and scored two more to pace the Lady Dragons’ offense.

Late last week, Clinton split a pair of games. The Lady Dragons posted an 8-4 victory over Wartburg Central on Thursday.

The Lady Dragons used a five-run sixth inning to open an 8-2 lead as Marissa Eccles clubbed a grand slam in the frame. She went 1-for-3 with five RBIs and a run scored for Clinton, which led 3-1 after four innings.

Tomi Taylor had two hits and scored a run in the game for Clinton (3-2, 1-0 in District 4-AAA).

The Lady Dragons closed the week with a 7-1 loss to Gibbs Friday in Corryton.

Against the Lady Eagles, McKamey had two hits, including a double, and Sherwood had a pair of hits and drove in Clinton’s lone run.

Lady Dragons Coach Leonard Sams tipped his hat to Gibbs, a longtime state powerhouse on the softball scene.

“Gibbs just outplayed us; they were a better team than we were,” Sams said. “Honestly, we should just have one loss this year, and that’s to Gibbs.”

The Lady Dragons bounced back Monday and defeated Coalfield 16-2. Clinton had 12 hits and took advantage of six errors by the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Eccles went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. She also scored two runs and stole a base. Sherwood went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Adkins homered.

“I was very pleased with the consistency in our (batting) order and with the way we hit line drives,” Sams said.
