CHS soccer wins back-to-back on the pitch

Clinton High School’s boys soccer team entered the week on a two-game winning streak.

The Dragons (5-5 overall, 1-1 in District 5-AA) picked up their first league victory of the season when they outlasted the Scott Highlanders 3-2 in overtime Thursday night.

“That was a great game; they got out in front and they were ahead 1-0 at halftime,” Clinton coach Gene Chunn said. “Then we scored two goals, and then we were called for a foul in the box and they made a (penalty kick) and it went to overtime.”

The Dragons would end things midway through the first sudden-death frame when Julio DeValle tallied the game-winning marker.

“Julio got the golden goal with five minutes left in the first overtime,” Chunn said.

Down 1-0 in the second half, the Dragons knotted the match on the equalizer when Antares Hansen tallied off an assist from Owen Gray, who would later give CHS a 2-1 lead before the Highlanders sent the match to overtime on the set piece.

The Dragons opened the week with a 2-0 non-district victory over First Baptist Academy of Powell. Gray and DeValle scored for the Dragons against the Eagles.

Chunn was extremely pleased with his team’s effort last week, he said..

“The (Scott game) was exciting,” he said. “It was good for the kids.

“They’re learning, and they’re learning how to win and they’re learning how to play to win.”
