Diamond ’Cats are District 3 regular season champions

The Oak Ridge High School baseball team split a pair of games on the diamond late last week and clinched the District 3 regular-season championship Monday night.

The Wildcats defeated South-Doyle 7-0 on Friday night at Bobby Hopkins Field.

Against the Cherokees, ORHS (14-5) picked up production from throughout the lineup.

Jason Slay led the way by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Tyler Pickens also went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Caden Black, Mikee Teasley and Richie Ferriera each went 1-for-3. Black and Tan each doubled and scored and Teasley also crossed the plate.

On the mound, Khyren Welch earned the win as he pitched six innings. He struck out nine Cherokees while allowing four hits.

Jacob Franklin came in in the seventh and retired South-Doyle in order in the frame, finishing with one strikeout.

On Thursday, the Wildcats came up on the short end of a 7-3 decision against Gibbs.

Ferriera was 2-for-3 with a double. Slay came up with two hits and scored a run.

Welch had a hit and drove in a run, while Tan was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Monday night the ’Cats put on their regular season champions’ hat with an 8-1 win over Karns. Pickens went the distance for Oak Ridge.

The Wildcats will play a weekend tournament in Loudon County in the second half of this week. They’ll take on Loudon Thursday and Lenoir City Friday and then return home Saturday for a clash with Daniel Boone High School.
