Lady Mavs are putting up the runs and winning big

Anderson County High School softball Coach Allen Russell entered the 2023 season hoping and thinking that his young team might put it all together come District 4-AAA Tournament time.

The Lady Mavericks are playing some of their best softball of the season as they recorded four lopsided victories last week.

“I’m really proud of the way the girls are playing,” Russell said. “The competition isn’t quite as strong as some we’ve seen, but we’re really playing well. We’ve given up some runs but we’re scoring a lot of runs.

“We’re not hitting home runs, but the girls are really seeing the ball well. We’re drawing walks and we’re getting hit by pitches,” he said.

The Lady Mavericks routed Oneida 12-2 Friday night at ACHS and they won easily despite managing only four hits against the Indians. All of the Lady Mavericks hits were singles.

Kaylin McKamey had two hits, while Alli McKamey and Lily Summer collected one each.

Oneida pitchers walked 11 Anderson County batters and hit three others as Kaycee Baldwin, McKenna Miller and Reece Miller were all plunked in the contest, which went just five innings.

“We’re seeing the ball and we’re finding ways to get on base,” Russell said. “We’re getting hit by pitches.

“I haven’t looked at the stats from Friday night, but going into that game, we had 52 batters get hit by pitches this season.”

Makayla Simmons and Alexis Siebers each drove in two runs against the Indians.

Baldwin, Reece Miller and McKenna Miller also recorded RBIs.

Pitcher Ashlynn Grisham threw a five-inning complete game. She yielded two runs, four hits and five walks while striking out two.

The Lady Mavericks notched a pair of wins on Tuesday, April 18, as they defeated Fulton 17-4 at home in an in-school game.

Simmons led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored.

ACHS also picked up a district win later that night as the Lady Mavs topped Scott 15-0.

On Monday, April 17, the Lady Mavericks routed Oak Ridge 20-3.
