SoccerCats use big first half to secure win over Maryville

A big first half spelled victory for the Oak Ridge High School boys soccer team late last week.

The Wildcats (10-3-2) scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of their 2-1 victory over Maryville Friday night at Maryville College.

Tucker Smith tallied the first marker of the match and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The Rebels (6-5-4) picked up the equalizer a short time later when Ulises Quinones scored.

Oak Ridge’s Emmett Lee scored the game-winner and final goal of the match in the final moments before halftime.

It was the second road match of the week for the Wildcats, who opened the week with a District 3-AAA win on Tuesday, April 25.

Smith, Daniel Vogt, Denny Flores and Gus Merrill each scored for ORHS in its 4-0 victory over Knoxville Central at Dan Y. Boring Stadium in Fountain City.

With the win, the Wildcats, who went 4-1 in league play in 2023, clinched second place in the district standings.

Oak Ridge hosted Jefferson County Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time.

The Wildcats close out the regular season with one final trip to Knoxville Thursday night when they travel to Blaine Stadium to face Knoxville Catholic.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
