As season hits final stretch Anderson County soccer finding its stride

As the 2003 high school boys soccer season enters its home stretch, Anderson County High School may be finding its stride on the pitch.

The Mavericks (3-7-1 overall, 0-2 in District 5-AA) closed out last week with a 3-1 victory over Campbell County in Jacksboro.

ACHS had three different goal scorers against the Cougars as Jackson Payne, Landon Nichols and Muller Gudino all found the back of the Campbell County net.

“I felt like we did a good job using the whole pitch,” Anderson County Coach Chris Curtin said. “I feel pretty good going into this week, and I think they’ve stepped up their teamwork.”

The Mavericks are playing better as a team, according to their second-year head coach, and the team saw the benefits of its improved teamwork in a scoreless draw against Gibbs High School at Ernest Whitehead Stadium in Corryton.

“Our teamwork has improved, gotten better, and I think that’s why we did as well as we did against Gibbs,” Curtin said. “A 0-0 draw is not necessarily something that you are excited about or look forward to.

“But Gibbs is good. They beat Halls and Halls beat us 6-1.”

The Mavericks closed out district play Tuesday against Kingston. Results were not available at press time.

ACHS concludes the regular season Thursday against Union County High School in Maynardville.

Kickoff between the Mavericks and the Patriots is slated for 6 p.m.
