Mavericks begins region title defense Friday in Knoxville

A pair of area high school baseball teams will be in action in region tournaments later this week.

Anderson County will look to defend its 2022 Region 2-AAA championship.

The Mavericks, the District 4-AAA runner-up, will take on tournament host Gibbs Friday at Steve Hunley Field in Corryton.

The Mavericks defeated the Eagles in last year’s region championship game.

The 2023 region tournaments will be contested in a double-elimination format and each are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

The Mavs will play Gibbs, in the Region 2-AAA tournament, at 5 p.m. Friday. That game will be followed by the other first-round regional tilt as District 4 Champion Halls takes on District 3 runner-up Seymour at 7:15 p.m. The winners will play at noon Saturday for the region championship.

The losers’ bracket game will be held at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will play the loser of Saturday’s first game in an elimination game at 6 p.m.

In Region 2-4A, Oak Ridge makes its first regional tournament appearance since 2011 when it plays District 4 champion Hardin Valley Academy Friday.

The tournament will be hosted by Knoxville Central High School at Tommy Schumpert Park in North Knox County.

In Friday’s other game, Farragut will play the host Bobcats. Three games will follow on Saturday. Game times were not set at press time.
