Anderson County High School’s boys tennis team will play for a District 3-AAA team championship today (Wednesday, May 10) when it takes on West High at Tyson Park.

The Mavericks came in second in the district regular-season standings.

They have a senior laden roster. The team’s seniors include: Malon Haverkamp (No. 1 Singles); Walker Martinez (No. 5 Singles); Tate Russell (No. 3 Singles); Braden Miller (No. 4 Singles); Bryson Vowell (No. 6 Singles); Cole Phillips and Jermaine Allen.

Sophomore Reese Russell was undefeated this season at No. 2 Singles, posting an 8-0 overall record in dual matches this season. Tate Russell and Martinez were 6-1. Miller and Haverkamp each went 6-1, while Vowell recorded a 4-1 mark.

At No. 1 Doubles, the duo of Haverkamp and Reese Russell were unbeaten as the team went 7-0. At No. 3 Doubles, Phillips and Miller entered the week with a 4-1 record. At No. 2 Doubles, Martinez and Tate Russell won six of their matches together.

“We’ve been blessed to have these seniors,” ACHS Coach Robert Byers said. “We had these seniors come out after they won the state championship in football and that really helped us. They’re such good athletes.”

The Lady Mavericks finished third and had six seniors, including Anna Leonard, Erin Davis, Sydney Long, Josie McRae and Eowin Hunter.

“Our girls finished third and that was great for them,” Byers said.
