Clinton soccer wins district, hosted first region game Tuesday

Teamwork and an early goal netted the Clinton High School boys soccer team a District 5-AA championship last week.

Owen Gray scored the lone marker of the district title match to lift the Dragons to a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Kingston on Wednesday, May 10, in Roane County.

Clinton (12-7) was set to host District 6-AA runner-up DeKalb County Tuesday in a Region 3-AA elimination semifinal Tuesday (results were not available at press time).

The Dragons, however, entered the match on a four-game winning streak.

The goal was assisted by Julio DeValle.

“We scored early, about two minutes in,” CHS Coach Gene Chunn said. “Owen had the goal off a beautiful assist from Julio DeValle.

“Kingston has a really strong side and our defense was great. We gave up shots from long range.”

Also in the District 5-AA Tournament, Anderson County dropped a 2-0 decision to the Yellow Jackets Tuesday in Clinton.

The Dragons won their district tournament semifinal, notching a 3-0 win at home over Scott on Monday. May 8.
