Oak Ridge’s national championship team to be honored by TSSAA in July
The 1958 Oak Ridge High School football team will be honored by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame at its 2023 induction ceremonies in Nashville on July 22.
The hall of fame announced that the 1958 Wildcats were honored with the David Williams Historical Achievement Award earlier this month.
The team, which went 10-0 and was declared both state and national champions, will be the first high school squad to be honored with the award.
The 1958 team defeated Knoxville East (54-0), Chattanooga (45-6), Knoxville South (34-0), Science Hill (27-0), Erwin (52-0), McMinn County (40-14), Montgomery Bell Academy (56-0), Cookeville (54-0), and Fulton (61-0) before edging Chattanooga 14-6 in its toughest test of the season.
The 1958 Wildcats allowed just 2.6 points per game as they outscored their opponents 438-26.
