HVA netters shut down Anderson County’s doubles team run

The 2023 season came to an end for Anderson County High School boys doubles team of Malon Haverkamp and Reese Russell Monday at Tyson Park in Knoxville.

Haverkamp, a senior, and Russell, a freshman, lost in the Region 2-AA doubles semifinals to Hardin Valley Academy’s duo of Garrett Anderson and Billy Bennett, in straight sets, 6-3, 4-6.

Haverkamp and Bennett entered the match with a 7-0 record, but struggled Monday afternoon.

“I’m really proud of these kids and it was a great run,” ACHS Assistant Coach Robert Byers said.

“I really thought that they were going to go to state.

“But I really think it was a lack of experience,” he said. “We have a senior who’s only been playing for a few years, but he’s going to college somewhere. He’s going to Midway in Kentucky and he got some kind of scholarship. Reese is a freshman and I hope he comes back hungrier next year since he didn’t go to state. I’m really proud of these young men, they’re great kids.”
