Scarboro Community Reunion is set for this weekend

The Scarboro Community Alumni Association will hold its biennial Scarboro reunion honoring the Scarboro 85, while preserving community history, and unity this weekend.

From 4-5 p.m. Friday, July 28, the Scarboro Monument conceptual design presentation will be held at the Scarboro Community Center, 148 Carver Ave., followed by the meet-and-greet Connect With the Community Event at the historic Elks Atomic Lodge 1301, 262 Wilberforce Ave.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 29, the Scarboro 85 Unity Parade will include organizations, city and county officials, churches, bands, and performers.

Lineup is at 8:15 a.m., with road closures beginning at 8:50 a.m., starting at Hampton Road, turning right onto Wilberforce, right onto Fisk Avenue, crossing Dillard to Benedict Avenue, passing Spellman Avenue and Bethune Circle, and then left onto Carver, passing the Scarboro Community Center, turning left onto Wilberforce, then ending at Mt. Zion Church.

People may park at the Oak Ridge Preschool (Scarboro Building), Mt. Zion Baptist Church, smd Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Parade participants who left their cars at Oak Valley Baptist Church, Scarboro Church of Christ, or Hampton Road can take the shuttle van back to their vehicles.

Participating in the Saturday parade will be the Pearl-Cohn Marching Band from Nashville, under the direction of Owoche Odey. assisted by John Sevier, known for their varied halftime and parade performances.

The band prides itself on precision, musicality, and showmanship. The band was voted the best high school half-time band in Nashville, winning first place performances across the country.

This is its second participation in the SCAA reunion.

There will also be participation by the WCHS band program, Nashville, which promotes good sportsmanship, good citizenship, and enthusiasm in school spirit. This will be its debut at the Scarboro Reunion.

Scarboro Fun Day/Skills Challenge will begin at 10 a.m. with food and other vendors.

An announcement will be made of the Scarboro Youth 2023 award recipients, who will be honored at a later day.

The day will end with the Scholarship and Awards Banquet, Saturday, with keynote speaker Shirley Lawrence, Scarboro 85 Student, 7 p.m., and presentations of the 2023 scholarship student recipients at the Scarboro Community Center, 148 Carver Ave.

There will be a party following the banquet at the historic Elks Lodge, 262 Wilberforce Ave.
