Playing so hot, they sizzle

Lady Dragons continue to dominate District 3-AAA

Clinton High School’s volleyball team saw its dominant run in District 3-AAA continue last week.

The Lady Dragons swept Campbell County, 25-9, 25-14, 25-10, Thursday night at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.

With the victory over the Lady Cougars, Clinton improved to 13-5 overall and 6-0 in the district.

Not only do the Dragons have an unblemished district record, they haven’t dropped a set in league play. But Coach Lorri Johnson knows that things are about to get tougher for her team, which will be away from home all this week.

The Lady Dragons, who played at Karns Tuesday (results were not available at press time), will play Knoxville Central Thursday night in Fountain City.

The Lady Bobcats got off to a slow start, but they had won their last three district matches heading into the week.

And Clinton won’t be resting this weekend. The Lady Dragons will head to Chattanooga to compete in an elite tournament hosted by the Baylor School. The event, which takes place Friday and Saturday, will feature some of the state’s top teams. It was a late addition to the Lady Dragons’ schedule.

“We have a big week,” Johnson said. “We’ll play at Karns and then we’ll go to Central, and then, over the weekend, we’ll go to Baylor and that tournament will show us where we are as far as being able to compete at the state level.”

Against the Lady Cougars Thursday night, Riley Owens and Darbi Brummett sparked the Clinton hitting attack as they each came up with eight kills. Owens also had three aces and four digs, while Brummett finished two blocks and four digs.

Lanee Carmichael chipped in with five digs and Josie Moody finished with seven digs and was the Lady Dragons’ leading passer as she dished out 15 assists. Libero McKenzie Crisp also finished the match with seven digs.
