  • Lady Mavericks cross country and distance runner Kaitlyn Fisher has signed to run XC for the UTC Mocs.

Anderson County High School cross country runner and track-and-field specialist Kaitlyn Fisher will continue her academic pursuits and athletic career at the college level.

Fisher, a senior for the Lady Mavericks, finalized her college plans as she signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, in a ceremony Friday at Anderson County High School while friends, family, teammates, teachers and coaches were in attendance.

She said she chose to attend Chattanooga and compete for the Mocs because of her future coach and teammates.

“The coach was really nice and made me feel like I could be a part of the team,” Fisher said. “The girls were all really sweet down there.”

She noted that she also loved the campus and the surrounding area and the city.

“Chattanooga is a good place to have fun,” Fisher said “I like the area. It provides plenty of opportunities to have fun.”

“They’re also building a new athletic facility (on campus).”

Like many student athletes heading off to college, Fisher is looking forward to being away from home, but she doesn’t want to be too far away.

“Originally, I wanted to go far away, but then I decided that I wanted to be a little closer,” she said.

“I decided that two hours wasn’t too far away if I wanted to come home.

“It felt like a change, but it was also something I thought was familiar.”

Fisher initially will choose a major in mechanical engineering, but may change that.

“I’m declaring a major in mechanical engineering, but if I don’t like that, I may switch to physical therapy,” she said. “So I’m kind of undecided.”

She said that the

small class size at Chattanooga also appealed to her.

“It’s going to be important for me to have a relationship with my professors because I’m not the brightest candle in the box,” Fisher

said.”
