Prewitt gets win in upper weight class

Mavs go 2-2 in weekend Pigeon Forge duals

Despite missing several athletes, the Anderson County High School wrestling team won a pair of matches in the Pigeon Forge duals Saturday.

Anderson County had only four wrestlers at the event. ACHS lost to both Seymour and the host Tigers.

“We were decimated and we limped in there with about half of our team out,” Anderson County Coach Matt Slone said. “We had six starters out due to illness, the flu, or injury.

“We wrestled Carter, and I think we won that one 42-39, and then we beat CAK. They only had four kids there. But Seymour and Pigeon Forge got us.”

The Mavericks had an unlikely hero against the Hornets as Evan Prewitt (who normally competes in the 157-pound weight class), went up for the depleted Anderson County squad. He competed in the 165-pound division.

“Evan lost his match, but he wrestled really well and he was able to put us over the top,” Slone said.

“We moved him up to 165 and he’s normally at 157, but he weighs about 154, and we had a two-pound allowance that day, so that kid was probably about 167.

“So he was giving up 12 or 13 pounds. I was really impressed with him.”

Anderson County’s Aiden Derry also had a big day at Pigeon Forge.

The 190-pounder recorded pins in all of his weekend matches.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the Mavericks defeated Farragut 72-12 at Farragut’s Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium.

They tied Livingston Academy 39-39 in a match that was decided and awarded to Anderson County via a tie-breaker, as the Mavericks had fewer forfeits in the dual meet.

Derry had a big win in the match against Livingston Academy.

Josh Bingham (165 pounds) overcame illness to put up a stellar effort, for ACHS, which was without 175-pounder Kyle Buckner, who was out with an ankle injury.
