Dragons 50/50 in District play
It was a week of mixed results for the Clinton High School boys basketball team, but longtime head Coach Chris Lockard saw plenty that he liked.
The Dragons (3-6 overall, 1-1 in District 4-AAA) opened league play early last week with a victory at home against Union County High School at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.
The Dragons notched a 64-59 victory in their first-ever meeting with the Patriots.
“That was a big win for us,” Lockard said. “They’re a very good basketball team, they’re tough and they’re well-coached, and that was a tight game. That was the first time that we’d ever played them, and they’re a tough matchup.”
‘It really came down to which team was better at the free-throw line, and for once, it was us.”
Jeremiah Lee scored 20 points to lead the Dragons’ scoring attack. He also finished with four assists. Kaden Ison and Bryson Maddox scored 11 points each. Ison finished with five rebounds.
On Friday, the Dragons came up on the short end of a 66-61 decision on the road against crosstown rival Anderson County (7-4, 2-0).
“That game was a war,” Lockard said. “I was proud of our kids for their effort, and it’s like I told the guys on the radio, I think that we’re starting to come together.
“We’ll play Seymour at home on Thursday and we need that win, and then, after Christmas, we’ll go up to Kentucky and hopefully, things will really come together for us up there.”
Against the Mavericks, Carter Nelson (a transfer from Anderson County) had 15 points.
Jacob Dooley, another former Maverick, scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Lee finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
The Dragons return to the hardwood when they host Seymour Thursday.
Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
