Hawks finish season strong

Earn first round bye in post-season play

The Clinton Middle School boys basketball team closed out its regular season recently with a 56-20 victory over Horace Maynard Middle School.

The Hawks, who finished second in their league with a 6-1 conference record, had three players post double figures in the scoring column against the Red Devils.

Jayden Cuevas led Clinton with 13 points. Evan Carmichael added 11, and Bradley Slaven finished with 10 for

the Hawks, who will next play in their league’s postseason tournament.

Brendan Hayden and Xavier Gallaher scored six points each, while Austyn Phillips and John David Meredith added five apiece for the Hawks, who finished the regular season with a 15-5 overall mark.

Clinton will next be in action at its league tournament at Maryville Junior High, and it will have a first-round bye.

The Hawks will play the winner of the game between Sevier County and Union Grove.

The Hawks are scheduled to play today (Wednesday) at 5:45 p.m.

Clinton Coach Bobby Williams said that he’s pleased with his team’s progress this season.

“I’m proud of these boys,” he said. “With the exception of one game, we’ve been in every game we’ve played until the very end.

“We’ve concentrated on our defense this year. We’ve become a really strong defensive team, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. Hopefully, the season will go on a little longer for us.”
