After finishing District 4-AAA play with a victory on the road against crosstown rival Clinton on Tuesday, Feb, 6, the Anderson County High School girls basketball team closed out the 2023-24 regular-season with a pair of non-league road losses Thursday and Friday.

Still, the Lady Mavericks are entering district tournament play on a high note.

“After being 4-6 to start (the season), we won 13 of our last 15 (games),” ACHS Coach Mitch Cupples said. “We started 0-3 in the district and we won our last seven district games, so I’m really happy with where we are if you look at where we started.”

The Lady Mavericks concluded the season with a 17-10 overall record, and went 7-3 in the district. They’ll be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming district tournament.

Anderson County’s second-place finish in the regular-season standings netted it a first-round bye in the tourney and clinched an automatic bid to the Region 2-AAA tournament.

Cupples took the opportunity to give his team a rest since it won’t play again until Thursday.

“We gave them the weekend off,” he said. “Then, we’ll come back and we’ll go hard, and then we’ll know who we’ll play on Tuesday night,” he said. “So we’ll come back and we’ll prepare for them on Wednesday.”

The Lady Mavericks had a team outing Monday night.

They went to the Food City Center at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to watch the Lady Vols take on Arkansas in a crucial Southeastern Conference contest.

ACHS closed out the regular season Friday night with a 66-53 loss at Knoxville Halls in North Knox County.

In that game, Macy Basford scored 26 points.

On Thursday, ACHS dropped a 62-32 decision at Northview Academy.

Basford was again the Lady Mavs’ leading scorer as she finished with 19 points.

In the game against the Lady Dragons, Anderson County notched a 39-35 victory at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.

Basford had 15 points against the Lady Mavericks. Bethany Lowe added eight points, while Jaylynn Bullock and Emily Mustard each finished with seven points.

The win was Anderson County’s first at Clinton in quite some time.

“That one felt really good,” Cupples said.

“We played really well. Neither team got out of the 40s.”
