Karns win ‘good test’ for Lady Dragons

A hard-earned victory helped the Clinton High School girls basketball team end the regular season on a winning note over the weekend.

The Lady Dragons outlasted Karns 74-66 Saturday night in northwest Knox County.

The game was a hotly-contested affair. The Lady Beavers proved to be a valiant foe for Clinton, which finished the regular season with a 21-6 overall record.

Karns led the high-scoring tilt 20-19 at the end of the first quarter. CHS held the upper hand throughout much of the game.

But Karns was within one point midway through the final frame after Reese Roberts converted a pair of free throws to make the score 63-62.

But Clinton would use a late surge to outscore the Lady Beavers 11-4 down the stretch,

Roberts put up 16 points, and her twin sister Rylee, who scored her 1,000th career point in the game, had 24 points to lead all scorers.

“This was a good test for us,” CHS Coach Alicia Daugherty said.

“Their twins both had a really good night.”

Against Karns, Clinton had four players post double figures in the scoring column.

Lanee Carmichael led the way with 20 points, while Josie Moody added 15.

Allie York scored 14 points, all after halftime. Addi Gamble also finished with 14 points.

Daugherty said she was pleased with the way her squad has come together this season.

“We have a bunch of sophomores and juniors,” she said. “But these kids have really grown up this year.”

The Lady Dragons won the District 4-AAA regular-season title.

But they lost their league finale at home, falling to crosstown rival Anderson County 39-35 on Tuesday, Feb.6

Clinton, however, bounced back to notch a 47-40 victory at Meigs County on the road Friday night.

The Lady Dragons surrendered only two points to the Lady Tigers over the final eight minutes of the contest.

Offensively, Moody scored 15 points. Carmichael added 14, and Gamble finished with 12.
