Loaded schedule tests Lady Dragons

Clinton High School has endured more than its share of struggles on the softball diamond out of the gate in 2024.

The Lady Dragons saw those struggles continue Thursday night as they dropped their District 4-AAA opener at home to Gibbs, 12-3.

Clinton was supposed to open league play on Tuesday, March 25, at Scott, but that game was rained out and no makeup has been set.

Gibbs, which has ended Clinton’s season in each of the last two seasons in the Region 2-AAA semifinals in one-run games, had a 12-0 lead before the Lady Dragons scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lynnlee Adkins hit a home run for Clinton, while Tomi Taylor and Elizabeth Graham each doubled for the Lady Dragons.

The loss to the Lady Eagles left Lady Dragons Coach Leonard Sams frustrated.

“Our girls just didn’t come to play,” he said. “Our pitching wasn’t as strong as it normally is. We’ll see them again and we’ll be ready next time.

“We just have to move forward. Our schedule is going to get a little easier and so now they can just relax and play now.”
