Mavericks pick up district win, beat Patriots
The Mavericks, who got off to an 0-2 start to open the 2024 campaign, found their way into the win column twice last week.
On Thursday, Anderson County picked up its first District 4-AA victory of the season as it topped Union County, 5-1.
Charlie Pemberton scored two goals against the Patriots, while Kai Morris, Gavin Higgs and Landon Nichols added one marker each.
ACHS (2-2 overall, 1-1 in District 4-AA) opened the week with a 3-1 victory over Carter in Strawberry Plains on Tuesday, March 26.
Three different players found the back of the net against the Hornets. Andrew Wilson, Foster Madron and Muller Gudino provided the offense for the Mavericks.
During its opening week of the season, Anderson County dropped an 8-1 decision to Kingston, a former league rival, and fell 1-0 in its district opener to Gibbs in a frustrating match, according to Curtin.
“I saw some improvement between Gibbs and Kingston,” Curtin said. “The Gibbs game was frustrating because that’s game we should’ve never lost.
“We’re looking forward to playing Gibbs again, quite honestly, but that won’t happen until the district tournament.”
Moving forward, the Mavs will play in the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg this weekend. Anderson County will open play Friday against Henry County at 6 p.m. They’ll play Sequatchie Saturday at 1:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament against Haywood at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Curtin said he always relishes the opportunity to play in the Smoky Mountain Cup.
“They always put on a good tournament,” he said. “You always have good competition and you get to play and see some teams that you wouldn’t normally get to see.
“I’m looking forward to a good week, another week of growth, and I want to see improvement in every game,” he said.
