Dragons soccer stings Hornets 2-1

Clinton High School boys soccer team notched its first win of the 2024 season on the road late last, With that victory the Dragons gave their coach a bit of a homecoming present,

Clinton made the trip to Strawberry Plains and lift East Knox County with a 2-1 victory over the host Carter Hornets.

The Dragons (1-3-1) never trailed in the match, which was the place where coach Gene Chunn coached for nearly two decades.

Chunn said he had a great return and that his side’s victory made things just a bit sweeter.

“It was really great to be back on that pitch over there,” Chunn said. “I had 17 great years as coach over there and I saw a lot of great people.

“It was great to be back home and I want to thank (Carter) coach Dustin (Dudley) for inviting us to come over there and play. We had a scrimmage with them last year, and it all brought back a lot of great memories.”

As for the match, the Dragons never trailed, opening a 2-0 advantage by halftime.

“I think we grew up a lot, and hopefully, we can continue to grow,” Chunn said. “It was great to get that first win. We played really well.”

Osmar Vasquez and Julio Del Valle each scored a goal for Clinton, while Cristian Gutierrez was credited with an assist on both goals.

The Dragons had 13 shots against the Hornets. Seven of those shots landed on target and Clinton was whistled for 13 offsides calls.

“We really didn’t finish as well as we should have,” Chunn said. “We had 13 shots and seven of those shots were on goal, and then we had 13 offsides calls.”

Clinton opened the week on Tuesday, March 25 with a 9-0 loss to William Blount.
