‘Highly competitive weekend’
Mavs show grit despite Rocky Top losses
The Mavericks lost two of their three matches at the Rocky Top Sports World complex in Gatlinburg. But Head Coach Chris Curtin found plenty of positives after a highly competitive weekend.
“We had a great weekend of challenging play and learning,” Curtin said. “We scored three goals on the weekend.”
ACHS closed its stay in Sevier County with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Haywood, a top team from the Memphis area.
Muller Gudino and Charlie Pemberton had goals for the Mavs (3-4) in their tournament finale against Maywood.
The victory came after Anderson County dropped consecutive 3-2 matches on Friday and Saturday.
The Mavericks opened the tournament Friday with a 3-2 loss to Henry County and what Curtin called one of his side’s toughest games of the season.
“In that first game, we played one of the toughest, if not the toughest team, that we played all season,” Curtin said. “I was really proud of the boys for the way we competed.
Caiden Miller and Andrew Wilson each tallied for the Mavericks Friday night.
On Saturday, afternoon, the Mavericks saw another solid team as they faced Sequatchie County.
Again, the Mavericks came up on the short end of a 3-2 result, despite getting markers from Pemberton and Wilson.
Anderson County will have a bit of an extended break before they have a District 4-AAA game at home against the Scott Highlanders on Friday night.
Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m.
“We play Scott on Friday and that’s a big district game and a big district rivalry for us,” Curtin said.
