The 2024 softball season has been a long one for Clinton High School.

The Lady Dragons have battled more than their fair share of injuries and, like all other area teams, they have been hampered by inclement weather throughout the year.

But Clinton is beginning to hit its stride as the 2024 campaign enters the home stretch.

The Lady Dragons had a big game to close out last week when they shut out crosstown rival Anderson County 15-0 on the road in a game that lasted just five innings due to the TSSAA mercy rule.

Clinton scored in every inning of the game. The Lady Dragons scored five runs in their final team at-bat in the top of the fifth.

Senior leadoff hitter and shortstop Tomi Taylor went 2-for-2 and hit two home runs. She also walked twice, scored four times and had four RBIs.

Taylor Sherwood was 2-for-3. She hit a home run, drove in four runs and scored three more.

Sara Bishop went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.

Elizabeth Graham was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Lynlee Adkins had a double and two RBIs.

Bree McKamey pitched a two-hit shutout and also had a big day at the plate. She had three hits and scored two runs.

In the circle, she threw a five-inning complete game.

She had five strikeouts in addition to giving up singles to Anderson County freshmen Ella Varner and Marlea Finstad.

On Wednesday, April 17, the Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Mavericks 7-2 on Senior Night at Clinton.

Taylor again swung a hot bat as she went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored.

Adkins, Bishop and Heaven Britt-Kimbriel also doubled in the game for the Lady Dragons.

McKamey also tossed a complete game in the series opener as she went seven innings. She gave up two runs (one earned) and five hits. She finished with 12 strikeouts.

On Tuesday, the Lady Dragons came up on the short end of a 6-3 decision against Gibbs in Corryton.

Elizabeth Maples, Taylor, McKamey and Bishop all doubled against the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Dragons opened the week on Monday, April 15, with a 7-3 victory over Wartburg Central.

Graham had two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Britt-Kimbriel had two hits, including a double and scored two runs.

Marissa Eccles went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

McKamey had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.

Britt-Kimbriel and Taylor each had a stolen base.

Clinton Coach Leonard Sams said that things are coming together for his team.

“We’re hitting well but we’ve been getting good swings all year,” Sams said.

“All year, we’ve been hitting the ball well, but it’s just been right at people. Now, we’re starting to find the gaps.

“Our biggest thing all year, because of injuries and rain, has been trying to find continuity, and we’re pretty happy with where the kids are at right now,” the coach said.
