Despite seeing his young team continuing to struggle on the diamond, Anderson County High School softball Coach Allen Russell continues to remain upbeat.

“We’re getting better every day,” Russell said.

The Lady Mavericks did close out last week on a high note as they routed Coalfield 11-2 at home.

Kaycee Baldwin, Anderson County’s leadoff hitter and centerfielder, was 2-for-5 against the Lady Jackets.

She came up with a triple, knocked in three runs and scored two more.

Alli McKamey had three hits, including a double.

Ashlynn Grisham had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lady Mavs.

Alexis Siebers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Reese Brock doubled, scored two runs and drove in another.

Ella Varner singled, scored and knocked in a run in the contest.

On Thursday, the Lady Mavericks closed out their District 4-AAA series against crosstown rival Clinton with a 15-0 loss at home as Lady Dragons pitcher Bree McKamey threw a two-hit shutout.

“We just couldn’t hit McKamey,” Russell said.

Varner and Marlea Finstad each singled off McKamey.

On Wednesday, April 17, Clinton celebrated its senior night with a 7-2 victory over the Lady Mavericks.

“We played pretty well against them over there, but Clinton is a great team laden with upper classmen,” Russell said.

Baldwin was 1-for-3, with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base, while Varner went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The Lady Mavericks opened the week on Monday, April 15, with an 8-7 loss to Maryville, a team that routed them 15-0 earlier this season.

While it wasn’t exactly a repeat performance against the Lady Rebels, Russell said this one was a hard loss to take.

“This time we were pretty much ahead of them the entire game,” Russell said.

“We got up on them 4-0, and we had a bad third inning and they tied it up. We came back and went ahead.”

But Maryville got the walk-off victory when Layla Washburn, a sophomore, hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Miranda McCracken had three hits against Maryville.

Siebers, Varner and Alli McKamey each came up with two hits against the Lady Rebels.
