Lady Mavericks rebound with doubleheader sweep on senior night

Anderson County’s struggles continued on the softball diamond early last week as they suffered three lopsided losses.

But on Thursday, the Lady Mavericks bounced back to sweep Scott in a District 4-AAA doble header on the road.

In the first game against the Lady Highlanders, Anderson County prevailed, 11-2. The Lady Mavericks won the nightcap, 13-0. Both games were scheduled for five innings. The first went the distance. The second was called after four innings due to the run rule.

ACHS opened a 4-2 lead in the opener before blowing things open with five runs in the bottom of the third inning as it was designated as the home team.

Pitcher Ashlynn Grissom picked up the win in the circle in the first game. She went five innings and surrendered two runs, four hits and one walk. She finished the contest with three strikeouts.

Offensively, leadoff hitter Kaycee Baldwin went 2-for-3. She recorded a double, a run and three RBIs. Alexis Siebers was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Alli McKamey went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

In the second game, Baldwin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Lakelee Wade was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored. Freshman Ella Varner went 2-for-3, with a double, two runs and three RBIs, while Marlea Finstad was 1-for-2 and knocked in a run.

In the circle, freshman Addy Grooms threw a complete game and allowed one hit over four innings, while striking out eight.

The Lady Mavericks opened the week with a 12-0 loss to Powell in an in-school game on Monday, April 22. ACHS lost to Gibbs, 9-0, on April 23, before falling to Union County, 15-3, on Wednesday, April 23.
