Dragons riding four-game winning streak

To call Clinton High School’s 2024 baseball season a rollercoaster ride would be an understatement. But the Dragons closed out the campaign Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Maryville Christian School.

Clinton (13-19) is headed into the District 4-AAA Tournament on a four-game winning streak. The Dragons, the No. 3 seed opened tournament play Tuesday against No. 6 Scott at Anderson County. Results were not available at press time.

But fifth-year head coach Rob Stacy is pleased with his team’s progress.

“I think we’re playing good baseball right now,” Stacy said. “We’re playing our best baseball of the season at the right time, heading into the district tournament.”

Against Maryville Christian in an early game Saturday, three Dragons’ pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter as Harrison Shelton pitched three innings and earned the win on the mound. He gave up one run, one hit and two walks. He had five strikeouts. Sam Duggins and Isaiah Slaven each pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

Duggins yielded one hit and had three strikeouts, while Slaven gave up two hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Shelton and Slaven both came up big at the plate for Clinton as both collected three hits. Shelton went 3-for-3. He scored two runs and drove in another. He doubled and had two stolen bases. Slaven was 3-for-4 with two doubles. He also chipped in with an RBI and a run scored.

Garrett Davis came up with a hit, two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Jayce Mack singled, scored and drove in four runs.

On Friday night, the Dragons outlasted one-time league rival Campbell County, 5-2, at Jaycee Park. Slaven went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jayce Mack was 1-fot-3 and knocked in a run. Garrett Davis doubled and scored against the Cougars.

Clinton closed out regular-season district play with a sweep of Cumberland Gap early last week.

On Monday, April 22, the Dragons defeated the Panthers, 11-1, at home. Davis, Slaven and Braden Hensley each came up with two hits in the series opener at Jaycee Park. Slaven, Mack, Shelton and Hensley all doubled.

Davis scored three runs, while Shelton scored twice and Hensley scored once. Slaven, Hensley and Mack all came up with two RBIs each.

The following day, the Dragons made the trip to Cumberland Gap and notched a 12-2 victory. Slaven had three hits, including a double, and drove in five runs. He also stole a base and scored a run. Shelton went 2-for-4 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI.
