Anderson County Schools updates code of conduct

No more parking lot hangouts, but diabetic supplies allowed

For the next school year, Anderson County Schools will ban hanging out in cars before school, but will permit students to carry supplies to help with diabetes.

Board member Jo Williams made the motion, and member Glenda Langenberg seconded to approve the changes to the school system’s code of conduct for next year. It passed unanimously.

In a separate unanimous vote, the Board of Education approved the Student Handbook for the coming school year, which also includes the code of conduct and its changes. Students and parents will receive electronic copies.

Langenburg made the motion, and board member John Burrell seconded.

Under the new code of conduct, students can’t sit in their vehicles in school parking lots before school starts, Instead, they must immediately leave the cars and go into the school buildings.

“Threats of mass violence on school property or school related activity” under the new code of conduct are zero tolerance offences.

Students who make those threats will face expulsion for at least a year.

The student handbook for next year defines mass violence as “any act which a reasonable person would conclude could lead to the serious bodily injury or death of at least two people.”

Several other offences, like leaving school premises or cutting class, now have the “positive alternative to student suspension” program as a consequence under the new code of conduct. That involves students staying after school to do community service.

Another change involves listing diabetic supplies as a type of medication students can carry with them after they and their guardians go through the proper steps.
