Mavs, Wildcats to compete in passing league
Area high school football teams returned to the gridiron and the weight rooms this week.
Local players and coaches were away for the past two weeks, taking a hiatus from team workouts due to the TSSAA-mandated dead period.
In the coming weeks, preparations for the coming 2024 season will kick into high gear.
A pair of local teams will soon compete in one of the area’s biggest 7-on-7 passing league tournaments, which will be held in Northwest Knox County.
Anderson County and Oak Ridge will compete in the 2024 Knoxville Classic at Powell High School on Thursday and Friday.
The first day of the event will feature pool play.
The Mavericks will open pool play against Oneida on Field 1 at 6 p.m. Anderson County will move to Field 3, where it will take on Farragut at 7:30 p.m. The Mavs will conclude pool play late Thursday evening when they will collide with Webb School of Knoxville on Field 1.
ACHS went 8-5 last season and reached the Class 4A quarterfinals. The Mavericks finished undefeated in regional play for a seventh consecutive year in 2023.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, will open pool play on Thursday at 6 p.m. as they play South-Doyle on Field 3.Oak Ridge will then take on Hardin Valley Academy on Field 3 at 7 p.m. It will conclude pool play against Knox Central at 8 p.m. on Field 2.
ORHS, which went 9-3 last season and won the Region 3-5A championship, will begin its second season under head Coach Derek Rang.
Bracket play will be held on Friday, with games beginning at 2 p.m.
