Norwood Middle to grow and sell produce
Norwood Middle School is planning to grow crops to sell.
A memo from Principal Shawna Woodruff laid out the proposal, which involves a greenhouse structure.
The school will purchase it through a grant for career and technical education.
“We would like to expand learning opportunities by providing students with entrepreneurial enterprises,” she said.
“Students can grow plants and crops to sell to the community. This would allow the students to give back to the Norwood community while understanding the inner workings of marketing and business.”
She said the school already has the water and gas lines and the foundation in place. She did not give a cost for the project, only saying the grant will pay for it.
Anderson County Board of Education Chairman Scott Gillenwaters said it will be at “no cost to the school system.”
The school board approved the greenhouse proposal at its Thursday, July 11, meeting.
Board member Teresa Portwood made the motion, and John Burrell seconded.
Dail Cantrell was absent, but otherwise it passed unanimously.
