Ready, aim, fundraise Claxton church hits the mark with clay shooting event

Pull!

The Church of God of the Union Assembly in Claxton found a new way to raise funds for its many outreaches in the Claxton community a couple of years ago.

It’s a morning of clay shooting.

The event will be held starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Iron Mountain Sporting Clays in Kodak. Saturday’s shooting will be the third such fund-raiser for the church.

Realize this: This was a pretty big step for a small church that just gave away 200 backpacks filled with school supplies for the 2024-25 school year, and has an ongoing commitment to helping families during financial emergencies.

It is a church that “walks the talk” in the Claxton community.

But clay shooting?

“We have four fundraisers a year,” said Trevlyn Singleton, who helps the church with its outreach commitment and fundraising efforts.

“We hold a golf tournament in the spring and the clay shooting (as the biggest fund-raisers),” he said.

Singleton said the church looked at raising funds for its community outreach in many ways.

Clay shooting stuck.

Pull!

“Well, we found out there are two places in our area that could hold this,” he said. “The Oak Ridge Gun Club has a venue, but we’re not part of that.

“And then Iron Mountain was suggested, and they are just like, “Hey, Come on!’ and it just worked,” he said.

Don’t know a Benilli from a Winchester?

It doesn’t matter.

Participants are given course safety guidelines before they start, and clear instructions on how a clay shooting event plays out.

And they’re told to just have fun.

“It’s a fun event,” Singleton said. “People come out, they shoot, they fellowship, and we have a luncheon.”

Participants shoot at 100 clay targets in different stages.

“We’ve had 98 out of 100 hit targets and we’ve had two out of hundred,” Singleton said.

“The shooters trade stories, tips about guns … they fellowship.”

And, he said, nobody cares about scores.

It’s about the event.

It’s about helping those in need.
