Homeland Security rep gives CCS high marks

David Massengill with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently gave the Clinton city schools a good audit on their security.

Kelly Johnson, Clinton City Schools’ director, spoke about the audit at the Clinton City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 26.

She said these audits from the DHS were made part of Tennessee Gov. Lee’s policies after the Covenant School shooting last year, although that shooting occurred at a private school in Nashville.

Each county now has someone from the Department of Homeland Security helping its public schools.

Massengill works with Clinton City Schools, Anderson County Schools and Oak Ridge City Schools.

He previously worked with Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and had been a school resource officer at Andersonville Elementary from 2021-23.

Johnson said every three years Homeland Security and local law enforcement will conduct an audit of each school system’s safety procedures.

For the Clinton audit, Massengill worked with the Clinton Police Department and school personnel at each of the three elementary schools last week.

“Those audits went very, very well,” Johnson said. “Lots of praises for the safety things that we have put in place.

“We don’t always advertise the safety precautions, just because the more you put out there, the more bad people can try to find the holes around those,”she told the council.

“But know that we have a lot of things in place for school safety, and Homeland Security, and Clinton Police Department were pleased with the way those worked out,” she said.Johnson told Clinton City Council.
