Anderson County secures 40th straight region win
The Anderson County High School football team extended one of the longest league winning streaks in Tennessee football history with a 48-27 victory over Fulton on Friday night.
The Mavericks (3-0) won their Region 2-4A opener at home, marking their 40th consecutive region win. The win streak dates to 2017, with Anderson County often winning its league games in dominant fashion.
The Mavericks’ last regional loss was on Oct. 23, 2016, when they fell to Carter 56-28. That was also their last losing season, which they finished 3-7 overall.
Since then, Anderson County has become one of East Tennessee’s most dominant programs, going 15-0 in 2022 to capture its first-ever state championship.
Over the course of the streak, only two games have been decided by fewer than three touchdowns. In 2021, Anderson County edged South-Doyle 24-21, and in 2018, the Mavericks defeated Chattanooga Howard 28-14.
Head Coach Davey Gillum emphasized the importance of taking games one at a time, even though the streak is an important milestone for the program.
“Forty region wins in a row is no small accomplishment,” Gillum said. “It shows the hard work that has gone into each season over the last eight years. Consistency comes from that effort.”
While the winning streak is a source of pride, Gillum acknowledged that maintaining it will require continued dedication.
“This year will be our biggest challenge in years,” he said. “Several strong veteran teams are in the region, including Gibbs, which has one of its best teams in recent history. Our team is talented, but we must keep improving to extend the streak.”
The Mavericks will look to add to their winning streak when they travel to Sevier County to face Seymour on Friday.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Seymour (0-4) is coming off a 58-28 loss to Gibbs and has lost 20 straight games, dating to 2022.
