Clinton’s annual Touch-A-Truck and fire-safety event provided some thrills for kids – along with free food – at the Anderson County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., gave children the opportunity to see emergency vehicles up close, and even touch some of the more-fascinating ones, including fire trucks, ambulances and police cars.

There was even a visit to the scene by a UT Lifestar helicopter, whose landing was observed by a crowd of onlookers around 11 a.m.

Some of the kids got the chance to sit in the front seat of a Clinton police cruiser and even hit the siren button.

One little girl got a bit carried away, though, and had to be gently urged to let go.

Inside the big pavilion, there were exhibits by the Clinton Fire Department, Powell-Clinch Utility District and others, all while volunteers were grilling hot dogs and fixing lunch plates for the visitors.

Besides the free food, there were inflatables for the kids, and other hands-on activities.

This event is held each year as part of National Fire Prevention Month, which is celebrated every October to raise awareness about the importance of fire safety.

The month-long observance is intended to promote life-saving practices and home fire-safety education.
