Season ends for Lady Mavs at State
Another volleyball season resulted in another trip to the Class AA state tournament for Anderson County High School.
ACHS (27-14) saw its season come to an end on Thursday as it was swept by Creek Wood, 25-18, 25-19, 25-10.
The Lady Mavericks went 1-2 in Murfreesboro, with their matches contested at Siegel High School.
The Lady Mavericks received significant contributions from their two seniors, Shelby Kelly and Alyssa Meier, throughout their stay in the Midstate. Against Creek Wood, Meier finished with 10 kills, six digs, and one block, while Kelly totaled 10 kills, six digs, and one block.
The Lady Mavericks, who won the District 4-AA Tournament as a No. 2 seed, swept through the Region 2-AA Tournament to advance to Murfreesboro with a victory over Elizabethton in the state sectionals. They captured their lone state tournament victory against longtime district rival and regional foe Gibbs, defeating the Lady Eagles in four sets: 25-11, 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Meier recorded 18 kills, 20 digs, and one assist in that match, while Kelly contributed 13 kills, 18 digs, three aces, and two assists.
The Lady Mavericks opened tournament play in the Midstate with a four-set loss to Signal Mountain, falling 25-13, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17. Meier was again the leading hitter for the Lady Mavs, posting 12 kills along with 18 digs and three blocks on defense. Kelly finished the match with seven kills, 12 digs, and one block.
