Robertsville students answer teachers’ requests
Robertsville Middle School students in Oak Ridge are building things to help make their teachers’ work easier.
Eighth-grade students helped build a chair, a picnic table and accessories to help their school’s teachers.
These included curtain hooks, marker and eraser holders, and trash cans for printer filament excess.
“The teachers will come with a request,” said Eli Manning, the RMS advanced STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) teacher who presented about the program recently at the Atomic Expo event in Oak Ridge.
“So, our kids will go interview the teachers; they’ll ask them what they need and then they’ll come up with prototypes for them and test it out and then give them something that works more,” Manning said.
The students used the program Fusion 360 to design the items, and 3D printed them using Cura Luz Bot and Bamboo Labs. They engraved the signs using an Omtech laser engraver.
They made the chair using wood and power tools, including a miter saw, power drill, impact driver, orbital sander and Skil saw.
