Chestnut Ridge landfill hosting fall cleanup
Anderson County residents looking to get rid of waste that’s not suitable for the county’s convenience centers will be able to take them to the Chestnut Ridge Landfill, 140 Fleenor Mill Road, Heiskell, this Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The landfill will even be open an extra hour to help accommodate those with material they need to dispose of, including brush, limbs, and other wood waste, construction materials, and large loads of garbage.
Large limbs and tree debris should be cut into manageable lengths – no longer than five feet – the county’s solid-waste office said,
There are exceptions, however. Hazardous materials and appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning units and dehumidifiers, are not accepted at the landfill.
However, these items, along with oil-based paint, lead-acid or rechargeable batteries (no alkaline batteries), scrap metal (no wire, mesh or chain-link fencing), metal fence posts (with no concrete attached), tires (on or off-rim), and fluorescent bulbs can be taken to the Blockhouse Valley Recycling Center, 1480 Blockhouse Valley Road, Clinton, on Saturday, Dec. 7, also from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
To drop off refuse at the landfill, Anderson County residents must show a valid ID for proof of residence, or a current utility bill with their name and Anderson County address.
Residents will be required to wear a high-visibility safety vest while disposing of material at the landfill, according to an announcement. Those who do not have safety vests can purchase them for $5 each at the landfill, or they may borrow one of the county-provided vests that will be available at the landfill. Borrowed vests must be returned to the landfill attendant when dumping is completed.
Those bringing items to the landfill will need to be able to lift garbage into dumpsters that are approximately four feet tall, according to an announcement by the county, and regular household trash should be bagged.
“The landfill will cut off the line promptly at 4 p.m., so make sure you arrive and are in line before 4 p.m.,” the announcement said.
Also, the landfill will accept items from personal residences only; contractors will be turned away.
