Lady Mavericks struggle in opener
Anderson County High School girls basketball Coach Mitch Cupples knew his team might face some struggles early in the season.
And Saturday’s results confirmed his prediction.
“I look like a prophet, don’t I?” Cupples said after the Lady Mavericks dropped two games at home over the weekend.
Anderson County (0-2) opened the day with a 48-35 loss to Knoxville Central, another young team.
The Lady Bobcats, who had defeated Knoxville West on Wednesday, Nov. 20, don’t have a senior on their roster this season.
Bethany Lowe led the Lady Mavericks against Central, scoring eight points.
Addison Grooms added seven, while Macy Basford, Shelby Kelly, and Emerie Bullock each contributed six.
Later that day, Anderson County fell 70-20 to Sevier County, a Class 4A powerhouse with state aspirations.
“Sevier County is really good,” Cupples said. “They’re young, but they’re going to be playing for the state tournament.”
Basford paced the Lady Mavericks in the second game with 13 points. Kelly had five, and Grooms chipped in two.
Anderson County played Powell on Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time.
